How to Naturally Treat Reflux

Check for Tongue & Lip Tie

A tongue tie is simply tethered oral tissues (frenulum). While everyone has a frenulum, some are unusually short, thick, and/or tight which can result in many health risks if left untreated.

Tongue ties cause the development of a high, narrow roof of mouth, with the nasal area following suit causing airway restrictions and mouth breathing.

A tongue tie doesn’t allow an infant to latch properly - whether that’s to the breast or a bottle.

Babies with a tongue or lip tie may have an increased risk of acid reflux. When the tongue doesn’t create a perfect seal, large pockets of air are swallowed. As a result, this can cause air bubbles from the stomach, carrying with it the food they just consumed.

Osteopathic Bodywork

“Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that detects and treats damaged parts of the body such as muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints.”

-Philippa Murphy, Lactation Consultant CBS & Nutritional Coach

One of the crucial digestive nerves in the body is a cranial nerve called the vagus nerve. This nerve is often damaged during the birth process, or due to the way baby was laying in the womb - resulting in reflux and other stomach issues. A qualified Osteopath can manipulate this nerve to open up the interfered communication, and help relax the digestive tract.

*Osteopathy is different than chiropractic care, but chiro care can also help.

Infant Probiotic

The human gut is full of bacteria. You may hear the word bacteria and automatically think it’s a bad thing. However, it is essential for our health - as long as the mix of good bacteria and bad bacteria is in balance. If the bad bacteria begins to takeover, digestive disturbances like reflux can follow.

By implementing an infant probiotic, the beneficial bacteria in the probiotic will help support the gut flora to digest food and move the food faster, reducing gas and spit up.

Food Allergies

Certain food sensitivities can contribute to acid reflux. One of the main contributors is cow protein. If you formula feed, consider switching to a goat-milk based formula. If you exclusively breast-feed, consider switching your dairy intake to raw milk/cheese or goat. *I would try the previous three suggestions first, or in addition.
