Ultimate Safer Diapering Guide: creams, powders, balms, diapers, wipes

TCF vs ECF Diapers

TCF - total chlorine free

These diapers are not bleached using chlorine or any chlorine derivatives, which means they do not generate dioxins. TCF diapers will either have a higher level of hydrogen peroxide or supplement the process with oxygen or ozone.

ECF - elemental chlorine free

These diapers do not use elemental chlorine during processing. Instead, a chlorine derivative, like chlorine dioxide, is used to bleach the pulp. This process reduces dioxins, but does not necessarily eliminate them fully. Chlorine derivatives may cause skin, nose, and throat irritation, and are toxic to aquatic systems.

Diapers & Wipes Note:

Diapers: These are rough averages. Pricing may be vary a few cents depending on the size/count you need, where you order from, and if you choose to subscribe or make a one time purchase.

Wipes: These are are the rounded up prices per wipe based on a one time purchase of the largest pack on the brand’s website (if applicable, and if US based).

Wipes marked with a * contain sodium benzoate. This is not a disruptive ingredient on its own, and we use some of these wipes. However a small percentage of people with extremely sensitive skin may have a reaction.

I have also marked diaper/wipes with the affiliated logo if they are available at Amazon, Target, and/or Walmart (at the time of this posting).
