How to Spot a Quality Essential Oil

There are so many essential oils on the market it can be overwhelming, especially since they are not all created equally. When looking for a quality oil, there are a few things to look for.

Dark, Glass Bottle - Light can damage oils, and EO’s compounds don’t mix well with plastic, therefore a good quality oil will come tightly sealed in a dark (usually amber) glass bottle with an orifice reducer top.

Quantity - Typically quality EO’s will come in quantities less then 4oz, but usually half this size (15 mL or less).

Does the Label and/or Website Include...

  • The common AND Latin name of the plant used to make the oil

  • The plant parts used

  • How it was extracted (distillation or expression)

  • Does the label state that it’s 100% pure EO (not essence oil)

  • The country or origin of the oil

  • If you don’t see this, sometimes they’ll include a lot # that you can verify

There are many quality oils out there, but these are the three I use:

Other brands I have heard good things about, but can’t attest to personally:

  • Vibrant Blue Oils

  • Melaluca, the Wellness Company

  • doTERRA

  • Mountain Rose Herbs

  • Rocky Mountain Oils
