Sea Moss: Contraindications

Sea moss, just like other sea algae and seaweed, can accumulate heavy metals depending on the location the sea moss is grown and harvested. It is important to purchase quality sea moss from companies that take the necessary steps to test for heavy metals.

Due to being high in Iodine, those with hyperthyroidism can benefit as Iodine is essential for proper thyroid function. However, excessive Iodine intake can cause thyrotoxicosis in those with hyperthyroidism.

There is little research on the safety of sea moss consumption during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but it it mostly deemed safe if consumed in moderations due to its high Iodine content. The heavy metals is also a concern for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Again, why it’s important to find companies that properly test.

Because of sea moss’ potent anticoagulant and blood-thinning properties, those who take blood-thinning medications should consult their healthcare provider as it can interfere with medications.
